The Silver Coast
Costa de Prata

When you think of Portugal the first thing which springs in mind is the Algarve, although Portugal is bigger and has much more to offer.
Take the Silver Coast for example, it starts just north of Lisbon and stretches all the way to the south of Porto. Both these cities are connected by a motorway running parallel to the coast and both have airports, which makes this area accessible to a new form of development and tourism.
Property values in the Algarve are hitting the roof and the area is in a stage where the initial investments are already made. The Silver Coast though is at the brink of being discovered and already shows a wide variety of property at accessible prices.
According to “A Place in the Sun” the Silver Coast is “Booming Business”.
Now is the moment to invest in real estate on the Silver Coast, property prices are rising at 10% to 15% per annum.

The Silver Coast has lots of beautiful beaches and coastal villages to offer, places such as Peniche, Foz do Arelho, São Martinho do Porto, Nazaré, Figueira da Foz are becoming more popular. Inland places like Sintra, Torres Vedras, Óbidos, Alcobaça, Batalha and Coimbra are becoming more important and together these places make the Silver Coast to what it is today.
It's an area rich with folklore and history and the Portuguese are doing there best to add better conditions and give an easier access to this already colorful and lively west coast.

With a moderated climate of maximum 30 degrees Celsius in summer and an average minimum of 15 degrees Celsius in winter, makes the Costa de Prata a haven for those who cannot bare the southern and inland heat. A variety in weather patterns makes that it's never monotone, but still gives us the possibility to have our meals outside and enjoy the plenty of sunshine even in winter times.

Daily costs of living are considerably lower, for example, a decent meal can cost you about €7,50 and for a cold beer you wouldn't expect to pay more then €0,80.

Obidos

Without a doubt this is the historical and cultural centre of the Silver Coast, due to its position and well preserved image. The castle, the gobbled streets and alleys and the intact walls make it easy to imagine how it looked hundreds of years ago.
Obidos is known for it’s picturesque character and the various events being organized throughout the year such as; The Medieval Fair, The Chocolate Festival, The Christmas Fair, The Theatre Festival, The Opera Festival and much more……………………
There is a wide range of choice for accommodation, restaurants and souvenir shops and various beaches are a short drive away.

São Martinho do Porto

São Martinho is at approx. 13 km south of Nazaré and is known because of its laid back feel to it and the natural, sheltered bay. It’s ideal for families, since children can swim in the Atlantic seawater without the danger of big waves.
There are several good hotels, restaurants and cafes at walking distance from the beach and it has always been a popular holiday place for Portuguese living in and around Lisbon.

Nazaré

A fishermen’s village with a wide beach and high cliffs which has always been able to maintain most of it’s traditional outlook and is therefore still a very popular place for many people, Foreign and Portuguese to spend their holiday.
You can still see fishermen in checked shirts, black hats and their women with their many layered skirts fixing the nets and laying out the fish in frames to dry. Still they use the many colored fishing boats which used to be moved by using oxen.
Legend tells that the name Nazaré was given when in the 14th century, a monk brought from Nazareth with him a statue of the Mother Mary.

High above the town, on top of the cliffs lays a place called Sitio, which can be reached by a lift ascending a rail of 110 meters high.
On the edge of the rocks stands a chapel like feature called the Ermida da Memoria of which legend tells that Mother Mary prevented the local nobleman Dom Fuas Roupinho and his horse from falling down the cliffs when there was a thick fog.

Ermida da Memória

Inside the cathedral from the 17th century called Nossa Senhora da Nazare are shown hand painted tiles from the 18th century, a painting showing Dom Fuas Roupinho being prevented from falling and a statue of the local Mary Mother figure, which each September is being carried out to sea in a colorful procession.
